In the Moment (an excerpt)

He was tall and thin with long legs. His hair, shaven close to his head in short sprouts, was brown. It matched the color of his eyes but clashed against the thickness of the dark green patches on his uniform. She looked down at his duffle bag, wondering when, if ever, they’d meet again. He looked away and stared far into the future as if some crystal ball lay ahead at the end of the airport terminal. Whatever the future held, it drew out a tiny droplet of tear from his right eye. She sighed and rubbed his shoulder. Three hundered and sixty five days make a year. Multiply that by two and what do you get. Out of the piercing silence between them came a female voice on an announcer, “Flight 285 now boarding.”
His gaze returned to her.
“Mints are my favorite candy,” he said.
“I always knew,” she replied.
