Being you...
You cut your poetry from wood
On curved branches of Mpingo,
You write jagged sonnets to geometrical kings
In the silent forests of Gombe,
You make growth-rings sing ceremonial tunes
To the Fulani and Wolof,
You spin colorful odes on timbered lumps
On hollowed lumber,
You line ancestors in asymmetrical order
By a flattened rasp,
You dig dark secrets into auburn grains
On a Circular bark,
You narrate sagas of past war and strife
With a ripened gouge,
You slash beauty and terror into vision
Across the Serengeti plains,
You break ancient dramas into lyrical parts
Being you...
